Atypical Femoral Fractures: An Orthopaedic Surgeon’s Perspective

نویسنده

چکیده

Atypical femoral fractures are uncommon fractures that are often associated with extended bisphosphonate use. They occur in the proximal or middle diaphyseal portion of the femur with a short oblique pattern and have relatively thickened cortices. Prodromal pain symptoms vary and bilateral involvement is common. Because delayed or complicated healing adversely affects treatment, fixation with a loadsharing intramedullary nail seems to fair better than loadbearing plate stabilization. If a delayed union is noted, it is best to wait up to one year before surgical intervention. Optimization of the patient’s metabolism is also required.

Injuries Associated with Femoral Shaft Fractures with Special Emphasis on Occult Injuries

Background: Fractures of the femoral shaft are mostly the result of high-energy accidents that also cause multiple trauma injuries, in particular ipsilateral knee and hip injuries. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of injuries associated with femoral shaft fractures and how many of them were undetected. Methods: We studied 148 patients (150 femoral shaft fractures) wi...

Trends in the incidence of atypical femoral fractures and bisphosphonate therapy.

PURPOSE To report the trends in the incidence of typical and atypical femoral fractures (AFF) in patients aged >50 years from 2009 to 2014 and in the prescription of bisphosphonates for osteoporosis from 2001 to 2013 in Australia. Atypical periprosthetic femoral fracture: a case report.

We report an 82-year-old woman who underwent fixation with a long-spanning cable-plate for a bisphosphonate-induced Vancouver B1 periprosthetic femoral fracture. Non-union and breakage of the plate occurred at 16 months and necessitated revision surgery using a long-stem femoral prosthesis augmented with a cable-plate construct. Bone union was achieved eventually after 10 months.

Retrograde Femoral Rodding

Retrograde femoral rodding is a technique that has recently been used with increasing frequency for the management of supracondylar and femoral shaft fractures. A review of the literature reveals that this technique may have advantages over other fixation techniques in certain clinical situations. Retrograde femoral rodding allows the surgeon to treat bilateral lower extremity injuries simultan...

Spontaneous Subtrochanteric Femoral Stress Fracture Related to Alendronate : A Case Report

UNLABELLED Spontaneous atypical fractures of the femur have been reported in patients on long-term antiresorptive bisphosphonate therapy. Here, we report a case of subtrochanteric stress fracture in a seventy-year-old female patient on long-term alendronate therapy, and accompanying management challenges. Potential measures to prevent this complication of antiresorptive treatment for osteoporos...
